Spotlight on DB2 LUW

Real-Time Monitoring and Diagnostics for DB2 Databases

Spotlight® on DB2 diagnoses performance problems on DB2 for Linux, Unix, and Windows in real time. It enables you to rapidly pinpoint the source of problems and quickly respond to issues that need attention. It graphically displays all database activity in an intuitive user interface that includes an architecturally accurate representation of your DB2 environment. The overview screen reveals activity across the entire DB2 instance, so it’s easy to analyze connections, wait events, locking, memory, and disk I/O.

Improved Performance for DB2 for LUW Connections – Manage multiple instance attachments with little impact on performance.

Full Support of DB2 for LUW 9.5 Metrics – Access statistics for OLAP functions, RUNSTATS activities, and workloads through Spotlight's database analysis, database manager summary, client applications analysis, and top SQL drilldowns.

Workload Management Analysis Drilldown – Review DB2 workload management (WLM) information and statistics captured for your DB2 for LUW 9.5 database. The drilldown covers five major WLM areas (service classes, workloads, work classes, work actions, activities, and threshold queues) that you can explore through summary information and sub-drilldowns.

Workload Activities Sub-Drilldown – Access DB2 workload management statistics that reveal activity for each application connection.

To install and run Spotlight on DB2 for LUW, ensure your system meets the following minimum hardware and software requirements. Refer to the Spotlight on DB2 for LUW Installation Guide for detailed system requirement information, including recommended DB2 maintenance levels.

Requirements for the Client Computer

Operating System

• Windows 2003 (32-bit)
Note: This version is recommended for monitoring local databases only.

• Windows XP (32-bit)

• Windows Vista (32-bit)

• Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit)

Memory512 MB RAM (minimum); 1 GB (recommended)
For multi-partitioned environments, upgrade memory as needed.
Hard Disk Space60 MB of free hard-disk space
DB2 ClientIBM DB2 for Linux, Unix, and Windows (LUW) Runtime Client 8.1 or later, installed using the typical installation method

Requirements for Servers with Monitored Databases

DB2 Data Server

• IBM DB2 for Linux, Unix, or Windows (LUW) Enterprise Server Edition (ESE) 8.1 (with FixPak 1 applied) or later (64-bit); 9.1 or later (64-bit)

• For a DB2 for LUW 8 server on which you want to monitor SMS space, Toad for DB2 Agent 5.1 or later (or Quest Central for DB2 Agent 4.5 or later)

Requirements for the Toad for DB2 Agent or Quest Central for DB2 Agent

To enable Spotlight to monitor SMS tablespaces in a DB2 for LUW 8 environment, you must install either the Toad for DB2 Agent or the Quest Central for DB2 Agent 4.5 or later on each DB2 for LUW 8 server whose databases you are monitoring.
Note: Spotlight does not require the agent to monitor SMS tablespaces in a DB2 for LUW 9.1 or later environment. Additionally, agent installation is not required when the Spotlight client and the DB2 for LUW 8 server are installed on the same machine or when a 4.5 or later version of the Quest Central for DB2 Agent already exists on the server.
Both agents run on any of these platforms:
Operating System• Microsoft Windows 2000, 2003 (32-bit), XP (32-bit), Vista (32-bit)
• Sun Solaris 7 or later
• IBM AIX 4.3 or later
• SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 and 9 for zLinux
• SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 and 9 United Linux for Intel x86
• SuSE Linux (2.6 Kernel) on AMD64 (x86_64)
• RedHat Enterprise Linux AS 3.0 and 4.0 zLinux (32-bit)
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 2.1, 3.0, and 4.0 for Intel x86
• RedHat Enterprise Linux AS 4.0 (2.6 Kernel) on AMD64 (x86)
Note: For Red Hat Linux, you must install the compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.122.i386.rpm compatibility library. You will find this package on the RedHat Advanced Server 3.0 installation CDs.
Note: For Sun Solaris 7 servers, you must apply Sun Solaris 7 patch 106327. If this patch is not already applied, you can apply it as part of the agent installation and configuration process, as described in Spotlight on DB2 for LUW Installation Guide.

Requirements for Integration with knowledge Xpert

To take advantage of links to Knowledge Xpert topics in Spotlight's What's This? help on the home pages, you must have Knowledge Xpert for DB2 10.1 or later installed. Additionally, you must uninstall any previous versions of Knowledge Xpert on your machine.

Required Authority or Privileges

To Install Spotlight

To install Spotlight on a Windows 2003 machine, the installer must be either a Standard user (belonging to the Power Users Group) or an Administrator.

To Install the Quest Central for DB2 Agent

To install the Toad for DB2 Agent or the Quest Central for DB2 Agent on a Windows machine, the installer must have administrative privileges on that machine.

To Run Spotlight

Spotlight either calls DB2 snapshot APIs (for DB2 for LUW 8) or invokes IBM table functions (for DB2 for LUW 9.1 or later) to collect the raw processing data that it then translates into meaningful performance information. To run Spotlight, you need any one of the following authorities on each DB2 instance you are monitoring:
  • SYSMAINT
    or
  • SYSCTRL
    or
  • SYSADM
    or
  • SYSMON (or privileges equivalent to SYSMON authority)

Additionally, to monitor a DB2 for LUW 9.5 or later database, Spotlight requires that the user ID connected to the database must have EXECUTE privilege on the following table functions:

WLM_GET_ACTIVITY_DETAILS
WLM_GET_QUEUE_STATS
WLM_GET_SERVICE_CLASS_AGENTS
WLM_GET_SERVICE_CLASS_WORKLOAD_OCCURRENCES
WLM_GET_SERVICE_SUBCLASS_STATS
WLM_GET_SERVICE_SUPERCLASS_STATS
WLM_GET_WORK_ACTION_SET_STATS
WLM_GET_WORKLOAD_OCCURRENCE_ACTIVITIES
WLM_GET_WORKLOAD_STATS

Note: Spotlight on DB2 installation does not create any database objects. Therefore, aside from the required user authority, Spotlight does not grant or require any additional privileges on objects.
