New Features in Capacity Manager for SQL Server 2.0

  • Manage Partitions - This feature provides an enhanced reporting on Table and View Partitioning. It helps you analyze and manage partitioned objects, monitor partitioned data growth and detect largest, most fragmented or fastest growing and fragmenting partitions.
  • Manage SharePoint Capacity - This feature allows you to control SharePoint applications capacity. It provides trend analysis of current disk use and forecasts of future disk space requirements.
  • Capacity Planner - This feature allows you to forecast disk space requirements for future database consolidation.
  • Cross-server reporting 
  • Status Calculations - Identifies when space or fragmentation thresholds have been crossed (group, instance and database level) and will generate alerts (event log or e-mail)
  • Enhanced collection leveraging SQL Server 2005 mechanism - This version of Capacity Manager can retrieve SQL Server 2005 fragmentation data using SQL Server dynamic management views (DMV).

  • More flexible data collection - You can set up a data collection schedule for a particular database and choose type of data to collect

Supported SQL Server Versions

Capacity Manager for SQL Server supports the following for the Console (client where Capacity Manager is installed), database repository and monitored SQL Servers.

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 3a or higher

Console:

  • Windows XP, 2000, or 2003

Preparing for Installation

Privileges Required for Installation

To install Capacity Manager for SQL Server, you must have these privileges:

  • Proper permission to create and run SQL Server Agent jobs
  • Database Administrator privileges to run DBCC commands

Hardware Requirements 

  • Computer with Pentium III (Pentium IV recommended) or compatible processor
  • Minimum 256 MB of RAM
  • Minimum 30 MB disk space required for a full installation
  • CD-ROM drive or Internet connection (required for installation only)
  • VGA monitor, 1024 x 768 resolution, small fonts
  • Printer (optional) for printing graphs and reports
  • Mouse (required to access all features)

Software Requirements

  • Windows XP Professional SP1 or 2. Windows 2000 Professional SP4 or later, or Windows Server 2003
  • Internet Explorer 6.0 or later
  • Tahoma font
    Note: Quest Capacity Manager for SQL Server does not install on a Windows NT client.
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 client software is NOT required to connect to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 servers. Only MDAC (2.7 or later) components are needed!
  • .NET framework 2.0 must be installed before the console installation.
  • Microsoft SQL Server Books Online is highly recommended. Go to Microsoft’s support web site and search for SQL Server Books Online: http://support.microsoft.com/
