Archive Manager

Preserve, Control and Discover Email

Quest Archive Manager is email archiving software that captures, retains, preserves and searches for email. Archive Manager captures a single instance of each email message, applies granular retention and disposition policies and provides advanced search, ensuring efficient Exchange email archiving.

  • FastDeploy - Deploys in days, not weeks, without installing software on end users’ desktops or
    on email servers
  • BuiltRight - Stores attachments as single-instances separate from message body and metadata, reducing the space required for long-term preservation of messaging data, avoiding storage burden and maintaining performance on email servers
  • BusinessConnect - Makes email available to the rest of the business, easily integrating with external systems, sharing data with customer relationship management (CRM) systems and collaboration tools such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server
  • DiscoverySearch - Offers powerful search to quickly retrieve data to satisfy legal requests. By tagging data for categorization or later review, only relevant data is exported for further analysis and presentation
  • ZeroIMPACT - Captures and indexes new and historical messaging data transparently to end users. Reduces the storage volume of messaging data, freeing end users from the worries of mailbox quotas, meaning fewer help desk calls
  • AccessAnywhere - Accesses archived data seamlessly whether online or offline. Also enables users who are using mobile devices to seamlessly access messaging data from within the archive
  • KeepSmart - Uses flexible retention rules to help administrators keep only necessary data. By creating rules from your organization’s retention policies, Archive Manager helps achieve compliance with regulatory mandates and ensures that email is available when needed
  • SingleStore - Eliminates the need for multiple archiving systems by supporting Microsoft Exchange Server, Novell GroupWise and selected SMTP servers – all from a single console

Messaging System Server Type and Version
Either:
  • Microsoft Exchange, any of:
    • Version 2010 SP2
    • Version 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 6
    • Version 2007 SP3
    • Version 2003 SP2
Note: For the MAPI Journal Data Loader: The data loader service user account must have Receive As and View Information Store Status permissions to the mail store that contains the journal mailbox.
  • GroupWise 8.0.2 or 7.0.2 running on Novell Netware or Suse Linux 7.0.0.
Note: Archive Manager is not certified for use with clustered GroupWise host systems—configured for parallel processing, load balancing, or fault tolerance.
Best Practice for Journal-Only Environment: Do not recycle email addresses. When using journaling, do not re-use abandoned email addresses because Archive Manager will not differentiate between different users who share the same address, even though they were active at different times. The Mailbox Maintenance – Link Journal Messages By Email SQL job that assists with linking journaled messages to the correct mailboxes does so by matching on email addresses. If an address is reused, it will be linked to both mailboxes. For example, if a Robert Smith leaves your organization, but another Robert Smith is hired six months later, and the new hire is assigned the same email address as the one who left six months ago. This SQL Job is disabled by default and only needs to be enabled when using journaling on the mail server and a MAPI Data Loader.
Database Server
Any of:
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, either 32- or 64-bit version of:
    • Enterprise edition SP3 or SP2.
    • Standard edition SP3 or SP2.
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008, either 32- or 64-bit version of:
    • Enterprise edition SP3.
    • Standard edition SP3.
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005, either 32- or 64-bit version of:
    • Enterprise edition SP4.
    • Standard edition SP4.

    Notes:

    • Two Archive Manager databases should not be installed to the same SQL server instance. It is fine to install two Archive Manager databases to the same machine if the machine has two or more SQL Server instances running, and each will host a single Archive Manager database.
    • The Full-Text search feature requires that the SQL bulk insert directory reside on the same machine as the Archive Manager SQL server.
    • If you are moving from one SQL server to another SQL server, the collation settings of the Aftermail_temp table and the Archive Manager database itself must match what existed when the Archive Manager database was first created. As long as the two settings are maintained as specified for Archive Manager, the SQL server that houses the Archive Manager database may have a different collation setting that may be needed for other purposes on that machine. The supported collation setting is: SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
    • Use of the "sa" account for operational credentials during installation is not supported.
Domains
For Exchange:
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows Server 2003 interim
  • Windows 2000 native
  • Windows 2000 mixed (the default in Windows Server 2003)
For GroupWise:
  • Netware 6, eDirectory 8.6.2
  • Suse Linux 7.0.0, eDirectory 8.6.2
Prerequisites for all servers running Archive Manager Services
Operating system must be one of:
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2, 64-bit version.
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM or SP1, 64-bit version.
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP1 or SP2, 32-bit version.
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, 32-bit version.
All of:
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Runtime (VCRedist 2008 SP1): vcredist_x86.exe.
  • SQL Native Client (sqlncli.msi). SQL Native Client 2005 is required. SQL Native Client 2008 is not supported.
Note: You can pre-install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, the SQL 2005 Native Client, and vcredist_x86 (versopm 2008 SP1) from the AutoRun program folder in your Archive Manager zip file. If you are installing Archive Manager to a different system than the one running the installer, then .Net 3.5 SP1 must be pre-installed (before running the installer).

If running in an SBS (Small Business Server) environment: Archive Manager must reside on an SBS-member server that meets the specifications for an Archive Manager server.

To enable text-string searches and indexing of file attachments: You must install IFilters for the file types you want to search and index:
  • Microsoft offers a pack of IFilters for its Office 2007 file types for free download (link current as of this release). This Filter Pack includes IFilters for the following formats: .docx, .docm, .pptx, .pptm, .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .zip, .one, .vdx, .vsd, .vss, .vst, .vdx, .vsx, and .vtx.
  • IFilters for earlier-version Office file extensions (.doc, .rtf, .xls, .ppt, etc.), and for .txt, .htm and .html files, are installed with Microsoft Windows, and so should already reside on the Archive Manager server. You can verify their installation, and track and manage your IFilters generally, using third-party IFilter browsers, available at little or no cost from independent vendors.
  • Adobe bundles a copy of its PDF IFilter version 9 with its free Adobe Reader 9 software, and offers a free IFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms separately. Quest recommends you use Adobe version 9 PDF IFilters, or FoxIt IFilters.
    • Note: Installing Adobe Reader X uninstalls PDF iFilters, which then need to be reinstalled. For additional information, see www.adobe.com.
  • Additional prerequisites for all servers running Archive Manager Websites
    • Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) version 7.x. For IIS 7.x, certain role services are required to be manually selected and installed on the web server in order for the Archive Manager Website to run correctly. These include:
      • Common HTTP Features
      • Static Content
      • ASP.net
      • ASP
      • Basic Authentication
      • Windows Authentication
      • IIS Management Tools and Scripts
      • IIS Management Console
    • Microsoft ASP.NET (component of Windows, any supported Windows version).

Note: If using IBM DR550 as an attachment store, the TSM client must be installed prior to running Archive Manager.

Additional prerequisites for servers running Archive Manager Exchange Store Manager Service
One (either) of:
  • Microsoft Exchange System Manager 2003 (Exchange 2003).
  • Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI/CDO 1.2.1 (Exchange 2007/2010).
    Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 requires MAPI/CDO 1.2.1 build 6.5.8211, 6.5.8190.0, or 6.5.8165.0.
For the Exchange Store Manager (ESM) and Remote ESM:
  • MAPI CDO and SQL Native Client are required for any ESM installation.
  • The service user account must have Receive As and View Information Store Status permissions to the mail store from which the ESM will export mailboxes.
  • All files named mapisvc.inf on the machine where Archive Manager is installed must have the FullAccess privilege set for the Archive Manager service user group.
  • For the Remote ESM, the user that the Remote ESM is running as must have the "Log on as a service" right.
In a parent/child domain configuration: If you are installing Archive Manager in the child domain, you must create two accounts. An Exchange Store Manager account must be created in the child domain for the Archive Manager installation, and another Exchange Store Manager account must be created in the parent domain.

Also Note: The ArchiveMgr_Service user must be added to the Archive Manager Exchange View-Only Administrators security group.
Additional prerequisites required for Archive Manager with GroupWise Services

GroupWise Client Versions:

  • 8.0.2 (build 92614), or
  • 7.0.2 (build 562)

Novell Client Versions

  • Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows Server 2008 R2, or
  • Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows Server 2008
  • Novell Client 4.91 SP2, for Windows 2003

Note:

  • We do not certify GroupWise client version 7.0.3 because that version does not correctly process shared folders. With the 7.0.3 client, only the owner of a shared folder can see its messages in Archive Manager. GroupWise client version 7.0.2, however, does process shared folders correctly.

Other notes:

  • File read, write and execute permissions are required for access to the wpdomain.db file and other associated files and folders.
  • Supervisor-level permission is required for the Novell tree.
  • We recommend that the GroupWise Store Manager (GSM) run under a separate account from all of the other Archive Manager services.

File Store Types
Any of:
  • File System.
  • NetApp SnapLock Version 7.2.4.
  • EMC Centera 4.1.1, 4.1, 4.0, or 3.1.4

The following external storage types are deprecated. Only upgrades supported in version 4.6.

  • BridgeHead HT FileStore with HDR 2.2-20, build 23007.
  • IBM DR-550 version 5.4.1 (Version 5, Release 4, Level 1).

Note: If using IBM DR550 as an attachment store, the TSM client must be installed prior to running Archive Manager.

Performance Tip: A full or nearly full file store can dramatically slow loading of the Archive Manager website due to disk-read bottlenecks. Quest recommends a minimum buffer of 300MB free space on all file store volumes to preempt such performance issues.
